During the past few weeks, we have been monitoring the registrations and student numbers here at Goodfellow P.S. As communicated last spring, all class assignments in September are tentative and teachers aim to teach routines and “the first twenty days” of curriculum in order to keep learning consistent across the grade teams.
Despite our best planning in the spring using projected numbers,
for our September opening, the overall number of students currently attending Goodfellow has gone down. However, our class sizes in our French classes was quite high. We have been directed by the Simcoe County District School Board’s Central Staffing Committee to re-organize our classes in order to meet the Ministry of Education’s class size requirements. With this new organization (see attached), we will experience the dissolution of one class, an additional class and some combined classes.
This is the reality of many schools in our district. For more information about combined grades, please see the attached Q&A regarding combined grades or see the link: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/combinedClassrooms/index.html .
Teachers will address the reason for reorganization with students in individual classrooms on Friday September 21 st, 2018. Students in the classes that are involved in the reorganization will have information shared with them. Parents will receive a letter on Friday September 21 st , 2018 indicating if your child will be moving to another class. In creating the new classes, we will spend some significant time considering individual student needs and class composition.
Although change can be unsettling, we know that the first month of the academic year is early enough for the students to adjust and settle into their new classes in order to establish a strong bond with their teacher and classmates.
We will make every effort to ensure that all children are aware of the changes and will address their needs and concerns. At this time, we ask that you refrain from calling the office with personal requests as it will not be possible to consider all input in a fair and equitable manner. We will use our class at a glance documents, review our written classroom requests document from the spring which contains parental input and use our teaching staff’s judgement to assist us with the reorganization.
All changes will take effect on our SCDSB Turn Around Day which is Tuesday, Sept 25 th , 2018.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We appreciate your continued support!
